Dandelion: Make a Wish

To hold a dandelion is to hold a whisper—a secret carried by the wind. In Victorian floriography, the dandelion speaks of wishes, divination, and faithfulness in adversity. It is the flower of quiet hopes and long-distance love, often sent as a message when words fall short. “I’m thinking of you,” it says. “I hope you hear me, wherever you are.” In the British Isles, it was once believed that if you whispered into a dandelion puff and blew it toward someone you loved, your message would float straight to their heart. Some tales even say the drifting seeds are faeries in disguise, waiting to be freed, each one a spirit of longing let loose upon the wind. In old folklore, the seeds’ flight foretold the direction your future love might come from. And in one tender tradition, blowing dandelion seeds toward someone was seen as a spell—an act of devotion. Each seed became a wish, a message of affection, cast into the air in hope that the wind would carry your love back to you in kind.
